THE HAWAIIAN JUMPING FLEA : UKULELE
The ukulele usually resembles a small acoustic guitar in shape and comes from the same family as the guitar in origin. It is a small instrument with four strings, the name of which is abbreviated as ‘uke’. Although it is considered simpler than other instruments in its family, it can create quite impressive timbres.
The ukulele, which appeared at the end of the nineteenth century, was found at the time when Portuguese immigrants were trying to improve the instruments they were familiar with. It is referred to as a Hawaiian instrument because its adoption was by Hawaii. It has an important place in Hawaiian music and culture. The name of the musical instrument is also a product of this culture. It got its name from the Hawaiian word “Ukulele”, which means “Jumping Flea”, due to the rapid movement of the fingers on the keyboard of the instrument.
The tone of a ukulele depends on its size and structure. The four wires found are sorted as G,C,E,A (sol,do,mi,la). It has a distinctive, small shape and is generally made of wood. Mahogany and koa wood are preferred more.
Although it has existed for many years, its first recognition in western culture was with Marilyn Monroe's ukulele playing in Billy Wilder's film “Some Like It Hot”. In recent years, ukuleles, which have become rapidly popular in Europe along with America, have become very popular as an accompaniment instrument. It has been widely used in musical pieces with its calm and warm tone.
